Fishing Charter Tips: 10 Ways to Enjoy a Better Day on the Water in Myrtle Beach

Oct 23, 2026 | Angler | 0 comments

Planning a fishing charter in Myrtle Beach is an exciting way to explore the Atlantic Ocean, learn new skills, and enjoy time with family or friends. However, a successful day on the water takes more than choosing a boat and showing up at the dock. Knowing what to expect, what to bring, and how to work with your crew can make a big difference.

Whether you are a first-time angler or an experienced fisherman, preparation helps you enjoy every moment. Voyager Deep Sea Fishing & Dolphin Cruises offers opportunities to experience coastal fishing while enjoying the waters near Myrtle Beach and Little River, South Carolina.

What Should You Ask Before Booking a Fishing Charter?

Before booking, ask about the trip length, departure location, available equipment, and cancellation policy. Understanding these details helps prevent surprises and ensures you choose an outing that fits your needs.

Important questions include:

  • What fishing equipment, bait, and tackle are provided?

  • How long will the boat stay on the water?

  • Are fishing licenses included?

  • What happens if weather conditions cause a cancellation?

  • Are food, drinks, or coolers allowed?

  • Are there additional fees or expenses?

Clear communication helps you prepare for a comfortable and enjoyable day.

Set Realistic Expectations for Your Catch

Every fishing trip offers a different experience because ocean conditions change daily. Water temperature, tides, seasonal fish movement, and weather can all affect fishing activity.

Ask the crew which species anglers commonly encounter during your planned outing. Although no captain can guarantee a catch, an experienced crew can explain what is realistic for the season.

Prepare Before Heading Offshore

fishing charterYou do not need years of experience to enjoy deep sea fishing. However, learning basic techniques before departure can help you feel confident when a fish bites.

If you are new to fishing, ask the crew to explain how to hold the rod, use the reel, and respond when you feel a strike. Experienced anglers can also benefit from reviewing the techniques commonly used in local waters.

What Should You Bring on a Fishing Charter?

Packing the right supplies helps you stay comfortable throughout your time at sea. The sun can feel intense on open water, even when temperatures seem mild.

Consider bringing:

  • Sunscreen and polarized sunglasses

  • A hat with a secure fit

  • Comfortable, non-slip shoes

  • Water and easy-to-eat snacks

  • Motion sickness medication, if needed

  • A light jacket for cooler conditions

  • A phone or camera for photos

Keep personal belongings in a small, secure bag. Also, check the operator’s policies before bringing large coolers or additional equipment.

Follow the Boat’s Alcohol and Safety Rules

Safety should always come first during any fishing adventure. Moving decks, sharp hooks, and changing sea conditions require everyone to stay alert.

Ask about alcohol policies before departure and follow the captain’s instructions throughout the outing. Never interfere with safety equipment, and keep walkways clear of personal belongings.

Trust Your Captain and Fishing Crew

Experienced captains understand local fishing grounds, seasonal patterns, and changing ocean conditions. They use this knowledge to choose fishing locations and adjust techniques when necessary.

At Voyager Deep Sea Fishing & Dolphin Cruises, guests can focus on enjoying their time aboard while following the crew’s guidance. Remember that even experienced captains cannot control when fish decide to bite.

Make Fishing Enjoyable for Children

Taking children on a boat can create lasting family memories. However, younger anglers may need extra guidance, encouragement, and breaks throughout the day.

Choose a trip length that matches your child’s age and attention span. Explain basic boat safety before departure and celebrate the experience rather than focusing only on catching fish.

Respect the Boat and Fishing Equipment

Charter boats require regular maintenance, and fishing equipment needs careful handling. Treating the vessel and its gear with respect helps protect everyone aboard.

Avoid dropping heavy equipment, stepping on rods, or leaving hooks where someone could get injured. When you are unsure how to use something, ask a crew member for assistance.

Choose an Offshore Fishing Experience That Fits Your Budget

Offshore fishing options can vary in price based on trip duration, boat type, and included services. Comparing these details helps you select an experience that fits your schedule and budget.

Consider the total cost rather than the advertised price alone. Ask about group rates, included equipment, and possible additional expenses before making your reservation.

How Much Should You Tip Your Fishing Crew?

Tipping is a common way to recognize a hardworking captain and crew. Many anglers use 15% to 20% of the trip price as a general guideline, although gratuities remain discretionary.

Consider the crew’s effort, helpfulness, professionalism, and attention to safety. A slow fishing day does not necessarily mean the crew provided poor service.

A memorable day on the Atlantic begins with preparation, realistic expectations, and a positive attitude. Whether you are planning a family outing or spending time with friends, choosing the right experience can make your day enjoyable from departure to return.

It was thunderstorms earlier and the crew got out towels and wiped everything down-Captain very personable and getting his crew in line to make sure everyone had a good time. We didn’t really care if we saw dolphins or not? We saw one! But it is a very pleasant boat ride with good facilities and clean- good crew and nice boat- unbeatable for the price! Everyone on board was very pleasant. An all around good time. We went later at 6 pm, more for the sunset and boat ride than the dolphins! Very enjoyable.
