Oct 9, 2026 | Deep Sea Fishing | 0 comments

Finding the best fishing charter in Myrtle Beach involves more than choosing a boat and heading offshore. A great experience starts with preparation, clear communication, and respect for the captain and crew. Whether you’re new to fishing or have years of experience, a few simple steps can help you enjoy your time on the Atlantic Ocean.

Voyager Deep Sea Fishing & Dolphin Cruises offers fishing experiences for visitors and locals exploring the waters near North Myrtle Beach. Before heading out, guests should understand what to bring, how to prepare, and what to expect during their time aboard.

What Should You Look for in the Best Fishing Charter?

Choosing the right boat starts with understanding your needs. Some guests want a relaxing day on the water, while others prefer a longer adventure that takes them farther offshore.

Before booking, consider these important factors:

  • Trip length: Choose a shorter outing or a longer excursion based on your schedule and comfort level.
  • Experience level: Ask whether the trip suits beginners, families, or experienced anglers.
  • Equipment: Find out what fishing rods, reels, bait, and other supplies the operator provides.
  • Crew assistance: Ask how the crew helps guests with equipment, fishing techniques, and safety.
  • Boat amenities: Check for restrooms, seating, and space to store personal belongings.
  • Weather policies: Understand what happens if conditions prevent the boat from leaving the dock.

When comparing options for charter fishing in Myrtle Beach SC, look beyond the price. The type of experience, trip duration, and available assistance can make a significant difference.

Why Is Fishing Charter Etiquette Important?

A fishing boat operates differently from a typical recreational vessel. The captain and crew follow procedures that help keep everyone safe and organized.

Good manners also make the experience more enjoyable for everyone aboard. A little courtesy goes a long way, especially when several guests share the same space.

Ask Permission Before Boarding

Arrive at the dock early enough to complete check-in and receive instructions. Wait for the crew to invite passengers aboard rather than stepping onto the vessel without permission.

Once aboard, follow directions about where to sit and store your belongings. Keep walkways clear so the crew can move safely around the boat.

Respect the Captain and Crew

The captain makes decisions based on weather, sea conditions, navigation, and passenger safety. Listen carefully to announcements and follow instructions throughout the outing.

Also, remember that crew members may assist several anglers at once. Be patient when waiting for help with bait, tangled lines, or equipment.

How Can Communication Improve Your Fishing Experience?

Clear communication helps the crew understand your expectations. Before departure, explain whether you’re a beginner, traveling with children, or hoping to learn a particular fishing technique.

If you’re planning a fishing trip with specific goals, ask about them before booking. Certain fish species may be more common during particular seasons, and the captain can explain what anglers might reasonably expect.

However, no captain can guarantee a particular catch. Fish movement, water temperature, currents, and weather all influence fishing conditions.

Ask Questions Before Leaving the Dock

Don’t wait until you’re offshore to ask important questions. The crew can help explain the day’s procedures before departure.

Useful questions include:

  • What time should passengers arrive?
  • Are food and drinks allowed aboard?
  • Does the boat have a restroom?
  • What clothing and footwear should guests wear?
  • Are fishing licenses included?
  • What happens if the weather changes?
  • How does the crew handle fish that passengers catch?

Asking these questions early helps prevent confusion and makes your day easier.

What Should You Bring for Deep Sea Fishing?

Preparing for deep sea fishing requires a little planning. Even on warm Myrtle Beach days, the wind can make conditions feel cooler once the boat reaches open water.

Pack light, but bring items that help you stay comfortable throughout the outing.

Consider bringing:

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • A hat with a secure fit
  • Comfortable, non-slip shoes
  • Water and permitted snacks
  • A light jacket or windbreaker
  • Motion sickness medication, if appropriate
  • A small bag for personal items

If you’re prone to motion sickness, speak with a pharmacist or healthcare professional about prevention before departure. Some medications work best when taken before symptoms begin.

Should You Bring Bananas on a Fishing Boat?

Fishing traditions often include unusual superstitions. One of the most familiar is the belief that bananas bring bad luck aboard fishing boats.

There is no scientific evidence that bananas affect fishing success. However, some captains prefer that passengers leave them ashore as part of longstanding maritime tradition.

When in doubt, ask the operator about food restrictions before packing snacks.

Can You Expect to Catch Fish on Every Charter?

One of the biggest mistakes anglers make is assuming that every outing will produce a large catch. Fishing involves wild animals, changing conditions, and natural uncertainty.

Even experienced captains cannot control when fish will bite. Some days produce steady action, while others require patience and adjustments.

Voyager Deep Sea Fishing & Dolphin Cruises gives guests an opportunity to enjoy time on the Atlantic Ocean while experiencing the excitement of offshore angling. The experience includes more than the number of fish caught.

Focus on the Entire Adventure

The ocean offers changing scenery, fresh air, and opportunities to learn new skills. Watching the crew work, learning how to handle equipment, and spending time with family or friends can make the day memorable.

Instead of measuring success only by your catch, enjoy the experience from departure to your return to the dock.

What Happens When Weather Conditions Change?

Coastal weather can change quickly. A sunny morning doesn’t always mean calm conditions will continue throughout the day.

Captains monitor forecasts, wind, waves, and other factors when making safety decisions. They may change plans, delay departure, or cancel an outing when necessary.

For that reason, keep your schedule flexible when possible. Check the operator’s cancellation and rescheduling policies before booking.

Never pressure the captain to continue when conditions become unsafe. Passenger safety must always come first.

How Can You Be a Responsible Passenger?

Best fishing charter in Myrtle Beahc SCA successful charter fishing experience depends partly on how guests treat the boat, equipment, and ocean environment.

Keep personal items organized and dispose of trash properly. Never throw plastic bottles, food wrappers, fishing line, or other waste overboard.

Also, avoid touching unfamiliar equipment without permission. Fishing hooks, knives, and moving lines can cause injuries when handled incorrectly.

Follow Fish Handling Instructions

If you catch a fish, listen to the crew before attempting to remove the hook or lift it aboard. Some species have sharp teeth, spines, or other features that require careful handling.

The crew can also explain applicable size limits, catch restrictions, and procedures for keeping or releasing fish.

Following these instructions helps protect passengers and supports responsible fishing practices.

It was thunderstorms earlier and the crew got out towels and wiped everything down-Captain very personable and getting his crew in line to make sure everyone had a good time. We didn’t really care if we saw dolphins or not? We saw one! But it is a very pleasant boat ride with good facilities and clean- good crew and nice boat- unbeatable for the price! Everyone on board was very pleasant. An all around good time. We went later at 6 pm, more for the sunset and boat ride than the dolphins! Very enjoyable.
