Charter Fishing Guide: How to Choose the Right Myrtle Beach Trip

Sep 18, 2026 | charter fishing | 0 comments

A charter fishing trip makes it easier to enjoy time on the Atlantic without planning every detail on your own. You choose a trip that fits your schedule and experience, while a captain and crew guide the day and help you get comfortable with the fishing process.

Voyager Deep Sea Fishing & Dolphin Cruises offers options for first-time anglers, families, and experienced fishermen who want more time offshore. The best trip depends on your group, comfort level, available time, and how long everyone wants to remain on the water.

How Does Charter Fishing Work?

A guided fishing trip removes much of the guesswork from an ocean outing. The crew prepares the boat, explains safety procedures, and shows guests how the equipment and fishing setup work.

Depending on the trip, bait, tackle, licensing, and other fishing essentials may be provided. Review the specific trip details before booking so you know what is included and what personal items you should bring.

A typical outing may include:

  • Checking in before departure
  • Boarding and receiving safety instructions
  • Traveling to fishing areas
  • Learning how to use the gear
  • Fishing with help from the crew
  • Returning to the dock at the scheduled time

For travelers comparing coastal activities, charter fishing offers a way to experience the Atlantic beyond the beach. Conditions and fishing locations can change, so guests should expect a real day on the water rather than a guaranteed catch.

Is a Shorter Trip Better for Beginners?

A shorter outing can be a practical choice for guests who are new to ocean fishing. Half day fishing may also suit vacationers who want an activity on the water without using their entire day.

Shorter trips can feel easier for guests who are unsure about spending many hours offshore. They also give families a chance to learn boat routines and experience changing ocean conditions with a smaller time commitment.

Consider bringing:

  • Sunscreen and a hat
  • Sunglasses with a secure strap
  • Light layers for changing temperatures
  • Water and approved snacks
  • Motion-sickness supplies if needed
  • A small bag for personal items

Fishing with kids often works best when adults plan around patience, comfort, and attention spans. Parents should ask about age recommendations, safety rules, restroom access, and the expected length of the outing before reserving a trip.

Why Do Some Anglers Choose Longer Offshore Trips?

Longer outings give the boat more time to travel and may provide a different offshore experience. Deep sea fishing can appeal to anglers who enjoy the boat ride, changing scenery, and extra time away from shore.

Some experienced guests choose 12 hour fishing trips because they want a full-day outing and feel comfortable with extended boat travel. These trips require extra preparation for sun exposure, food, hydration, clothing, and personal comfort.

Voyager Deep Sea Fishing & Dolphin Cruises can help guests compare available trip formats and understand what each option involves. Asking questions before booking makes it easier to match the trip to your group rather than choosing only by length.

Who Is Charter Fishing Best For?

Charter fishing trip in Myrtle Beach SCThe experience can suit many types of travelers, but the right trip depends on the people in your group. A serious angler may want a longer offshore day, while a first-time visitor may prefer a shorter introduction.

Fishing with family can be enjoyable when everyone understands the schedule and boat conditions before departure. Parents, grandparents, teens, and other relatives may have different comfort levels, so choose a trip that works for the whole group.

A good fishing adventure should fit both your expectations and your practical needs. Think about how much time your group wants to spend traveling, fishing, resting, and being away from shore.

How Should You Prepare for a Day on the Water?

Good preparation starts before you reach the dock. Check the departure time, arrival instructions, parking information, and current guidance from the operator so your group is ready at check-in.

Wear practical clothing and secure footwear that can handle a marine environment. Bring only the personal gear you need, and protect valuables from spray, water, and movement around the boat.

Ocean conditions can vary even when the weather looks pleasant near shore. Guests who are concerned about motion sickness should consider their usual prevention plan before boarding and follow any medical guidance they have received.

Fishing techniques may also vary by trip, season, conditions, and fishing area. A crew may use trolling, bottom fishing, or another method that fits the day, but no technique can guarantee a specific catch.

How Do You Choose the Right Trip Length?

Start with the amount of time your group genuinely wants to spend on a boat. Then consider experience, ages, vacation plans, comfort, and how much travel time everyone can reasonably enjoy.

A shorter option may make sense for beginners or visitors with a full vacation schedule. A longer trip may better suit anglers who want a more immersive day and are prepared for extended time offshore.

Before booking, compare:

  • Total trip length
  • Expected check-in time
  • Travel time
  • Fishing style
  • What the trip includes
  • What guests should bring
  • Family or age considerations
  • Cancellation and weather policies

The longest trip is not automatically the best choice. The right option is the one that gives your group a comfortable balance of fishing time, boat travel, and overall enjoyment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Charter Fishing Trips

No. Fish movement, weather, water temperature, and other natural factors affect every trip. An experienced crew can use local knowledge and proven techniques, but no responsible operator can promise specific results.

What should I wear?

Choose comfortable clothing for sun, wind, and changing temperatures. Secure footwear, a hat, sunglasses, and light layers can help you stay comfortable during the trip.

Should I choose a shorter or longer outing?

Base the decision on your group’s time, experience, ages, and comfort on a boat. First-time guests may prefer a shorter introduction, while experienced anglers may enjoy spending a full day offshore.

It was thunderstorms earlier and the crew got out towels and wiped everything down-Captain very personable and getting his crew in line to make sure everyone had a good time. We didn’t really care if we saw dolphins or not? We saw one! But it is a very pleasant boat ride with good facilities and clean- good crew and nice boat- unbeatable for the price! Everyone on board was very pleasant. An all around good time. We went later at 6 pm, more for the sunset and boat ride than the dolphins! Very enjoyable.
